Dinosaurs was written by Henry Roberts in association with Nuffield Collective and performed at the MAST scratch night. I co-directed with Henry and designed the costumes for the performance.
We had no budget at all for this production, so whilst we had complete creative freedom, it was important that the cast could see the designs and the inspirations behind them. This meant they were able to dig through their wardrobes and ask family and friends to borrow items to wear in the piece. It was important that the designs could be flexible to accommodate this, but still keep the core impression about that character.
Dinosaurs is a comedic drama on relationships in modern times. The characters are A, B, C, D, E and F and do not have names or genders and open casting was used. The costumes were designed after the actors had their roles and we wanted to put a bit of the style of the real-life person in their character. If I were to do this again, I would have less binary designs for the characters and explore more with fashion and gender identity.
