Foundation Art and Design Diploma
During the first 5 weeks of my FAD Diploma at UCA Canterbury, we got to try out a week in each of the 5 departments. Below is my week in the Fashion and Textiles department. At the time I ended up choosing Visual Comms, as I wished to be an illustrator, but if I could do it again, I would’ve chosen Fashion and Textiles.
During this week we had to do two group projects and one individual. The group projects included creating dresses and costumes out of white school shirts with no stitching allowed and a project that was about working with silhouettes.
The individual project was up to you, but suggested doing one of the following: A) design several garments, explaining how you’d make them B) create a simple garment, C) Experimentation with textiles as an art form eg. embroidery, D) Fashion Marketing.
I chose to make a ruched top, in which I hand-marbled the white fabric left over from the scrap white shirts from the earlier challenge. I then styled and photographed this, later turning it into a short form zine.
